Although the greographical origin of the oil palm is West Africa, the climatic conditions there are not the most suitable for optimum yields. Zoning has been carried out for the main limiting factors, rainfall and water deficit, sunshine and low temperatures - thoughout humid tropical West Africa from Guinea to Zaire. The maps reveal an extensive fairly favourable area in the Zire basin and less extensive areas in the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon. West Africa can therefore be self-sufficient under appropiate conditions, and particular attention should be paid to the choice of zones for development.
