Resumen

Descripción

The ASEAN countries are the world's largest exporters of vegetable oils. International trade is becoming increasingly liberalized. Free trade demands the reduction and removal of trade shelters, both tariff and non tariff, even among countries not equipped to compete effectively in a borderless global market. Protection of domestic industries will continue to be necessary. The current tariff differentials on lauric and palm oils within the ASEAN region and countries importing such oils, the accelerating pace of trade liberalization moves under the GATT, and the formation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area should define the areas of possible economic cooperation among countries in Asia and the rest of the world in the future.
