Descripción

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary heart disease (CHD) are important have increasingly become important non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in developed as well as developing countries. The metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance syndrome, syndrome X) is believed to be an important forerunner of T2DM and CHD. South Asians have an unusually high predisposition to develop both the NCDs (1-3). During the previous three decades, the prevalence of T2DM has doubled in India, and the substantial burden of T2DM has also been seen in other South Asian countries. Insulin resistance and clustering of other proatherogenic factors, which are is frequently seen in South Asians, may be principal contributory factors for high prevalence of T2DM.
