Resumen

Descripción

The utilization of oil palm field and mill residues produced in Malaysia is reviewed. The main residues in the field are the pruned fronds removed during harvesting and the trunk and fronds removed at replanting. These are recycled in the field to enrich the soil. The mill residues include mesocarp fibre, shell, palm kernel cake, boiler ash, empty fruit bunches, palm oil mill effluent and bunch ash. Boiler ash is used for surfacing roads; excess shells are used as mulch for seedlings, or in the production of charcoal and activated carbon; palm kernel cake is used as animal feed. Empty fruit bunches and palm oil mill effluent used to be discarded but are now being used as plant nutrient sources in the field. The use of empty fruit bunches, trunks and fronds as alternative sources of lignocellulosic materials for wood-based industries appears to have great potential. This paper was presented at the 3rd National seminar on utilisation of oil palm tree and other palms, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 27-29 Sep. 1994.
