Resumen

Descripción

World consumption of oils and fats has increased considerably over recent years, reaching a figure of some 86 Mt in 1993. Virtually all of the major oil and fat importers between 1993/94 were Asian countries. In order of importance, these were China, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, Japan, Korea Republic and Bangladesh. In 1993/94, stimulated by significant economic growth, total imports in China reached a volume of 3.03 Mt, with per caput consumption increasing to around 9 kg. Vegetable oils, used particularly as food seasoning, accounted for the major part of these imports. In international terms, vegetable oils accounted for some 80 percent of total world imports over the period, of which palm oils, emanating mainly from Malaysia and Indonesia, represented the greatest growth sector.
