Resumen

Descripción

In vitro and in planta inoculation of Hevea leaflets with a C. cassiicola conidium suspension revealed differences in resistance/susceptibility (R/S) amongst the clones tested. The R/S varied primarily according to the isolate and environmental factors. Under the experimental conditions, 260 proved highly susceptible and GT 1 almost totally resistant. The secretion of a toxin, which was isolated and identified as a small, 7.5kDa glycopeptide, was confirmed. Using the toxin resulted in the same R/Sclassification of the 9 clones studied by inoculation with conidia. The susceptibility of a clone seemed to depend on its ability to recognise and/or neutralize the toxin. It is suggested that using the toxin for leaf applications can enable early classification of the R/S of clones in the field, and antibodies could subsequently be used to establish the correlation between isolate virulence and toxin production.
