A longterm tapping study (7 years) on clone PB 217, covering different tapping frequencies, stimulation and annual rest periods, was carried out in Cote d'Ivoire. The results showed quite clearly that the clone has a high yield potential, but that in order to express its potential, its latex production system has to be stimulated quite intensely. The physiological characteristics of its latex, which confirm its relatively slow regeneration metabolism, suggest that it can withstand numerous ethylene treatments with no ill effects, proving its very low susceptibility to tapping panel dryness. Logically, given that it is physiologically balanced, annual rest periods will not be of any particular benefit, and will indeed lead to substantial cumulative production losses.
