Enhancing fresh fruit bunches evacuation through mechanization.

Resumen

Descripción

Advancements on field mechanization for the oil palm plantation industry have over the years introduced machines and implements adapted to the local terrain conditions. The choice of machines suitability is dependant on land size, terrain condition, management preference and also economics returns. Presently mechanization approaches vary from plantation to plantation with majority on overcoming labour shortage. In the 1990s due to restriction in labour importation many organisations embarked into mechanization. Various machines of different makes were field tested by the plantation. Some were locally developed while others were imported. Some these machines are commercially used until today. However in the post 2000 era, the labour availability for the industry was made easier through government to government arrangement on foreign labour and a result the pace of mechanization was reduced. This paper discusses intensification of work on mechanization in areas which mainly focused on in-field fresh fruit bunches evacuation and transportation of the crop to the mill. Past and present experiences using various types of machines are reported. On research and development of machines, the paper highlights some potential machines to be further developed for future usage to cater for labour demand.
