Compatibility between 2 arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) cultivars, Cauvery (Catimor) and S.795, and 6 rootstocks was investigated as a step towards identifying suitable rootstocks for arabica types susceptible to moisture stress and coffee rootlesion nematodes (Pratylenchus coffeae), in studies carried out at the Central Coffee Research Institute, Karnataka, India, during 199293. Grafting was carried out during May, June and July 1992 using the wedgecleft method; high average percentage graft take (97.3%) and survival (89.0%) were achieved. The effects of the rootstocks and their interactions with the grafting month were often significant but generally not very large. The growth up to the 1year stage of Cauvery and S.795 grafts on the rootstocks of C. liberica cultivars Excelsa, Arnoldiana and Abeokutae was comparable to that on the commonly recommended C. canephora rootstock. The grafts on C. liberica cv. Liberica rootstock had significantly poorer growth.
