A study on the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the MAWA hybrid coconut palm (Malayan Yellow Dwarf X West African Tall) was conducted at PCADavao Research Center from 198494. Palms given ammonium sulfate + KCl (inorganic fertilizers) and goat manure treatments had significantly improved vegetative growth, started bearing earlier and had higher and more profitable yields than those given other organic fertilizers and unfertilized palms. Using inorganic fertilizers contributed to poor physical soil conditions. The application of fertilizers containing Cl also made the palms more resistant to drought, whilst organic fertilizers (particularly goat manure) improved the fertility and physical condition of the soil. It was concluded thatduring the later years of production, organic fertilizers should be combined with Cl fertilizer to sustain high yields and increase palm drought tolerance.
