Environmental impact studies. The evolution of DNA in the soil.

dc.date©1997
The importance of DNA transfer between bacteria and from plants to microorganisms is outlined in the context of transgenic plants and the persistence of DNA in the soil. DNA can survive for long periods in soils attached to clay particles and can therefore be protected from nucleases and other chemical agents. It is concluded that although DNA uptake by bacteria plays a role in evolution, in adapting to a new host for example, gene transfer between transgenic plants and microbes is a sufficiently rare event to be non-significant.
