Environmental impact of colza : first experimental results.

Gabrielle, B.,
Gosse, G.
Initial results are presented of a field experiment in Champagne, France, on water, carbon and nitrogen cycling under rape (colza) in chalky soil. The treatments included no fertilizer (CN0), and fertilizer below (CN1) and above (CN2) the crop requirements, with bare soil and fallow controls. N2O emissions were low, even under CN2. Ammonium volatilization occurred during the first 10 days after fertilization, ranging between 5 and 10% of the applied N. These relatively high values were attributed to the type of N fertilizer (urea and ammonitrate solutions) and to the alkaline nature of the soil. Nitrate leaching was reduced by plant cover. Nitrate contents under the crop were generally lower than in bare soil.
