Biosiesel, made from oilseed rape, is produced commercially on a large scale in many countries in continental Europe. It is not manufactured in the UK, except from one small plant that makes samples for testing. this paper examines the economics of building and operating a new UK biodiesel plant. It concludes that if the by-products glyceroll and meal are sold then the costs of biosiesel coul be attractive for specialist outlets where biodegradability is important in environmentally sensitive areas. examples of such areas are inland waterway, managed forests and urban public transport. Other potential markets are operations, such a highway maintenance, where the costs of fuel are heavily outweighed by the clean-up costs and pernalties after spills. Although the economics are based on the UK situation, the analysis could be adapted for use in the other countries.
