Resumen

Descripción

Palm oil milling is one of the main industries in the south of Thailand. Milling process consumes large amount of water, which consequently results in wastewater treatment burden. The wastewater is high in both BOD (>50,000 mg/l) and COD (>80,000 mg/l). Oil generally presents in the wastewater. This does not only hinder the treatment, but also causes the loss in production. This study is an attempt to reduce the milling wastewater by cleaner production concept. The milling process was divided into 4 sub-systems and were studied aiming to minimizing the water consumption. Mathematical models of the processes were construction based on the experiment results. The process optimization was carried out by employing the mass integration technique and Matlab package. It was found that the milling process has a potential to reduce freshwater consumption by 65%. Consequently, the wastewater generation was reduced by 67%.
