Resumen

Descripción

Oil extraction rate (OER) and kernel extraction ratio (KER) are two measures that are directly related to the profitability of any plantation enterprise. The main objective of the estates and mills is to contribute to the attainment of as high as possible these two extraction ratios in order to achieve maximum production of oil and kernel per hectare. The current lowvering trend of OER with a droip of about 15% between 1988 to 1993 is of a national concern despite the maintenance of a hig KER content at above 6% during the corresponding period. Over the years the oil palm industry has accumulated useful knowledge on the causes and effects of changes in buunch material on OER and KER when these two measures were studied in detail during two earlier periods. The first was when the bunch material changed from dura, and dura x tenera to tenera in the sixties; and the second was when compacted bunch material resulting from the more efficient pollination by weevils was processed in the eighties. The industry in applying the cause and effect analysis of the six major factos viz. material, manpower, machineries, management, measurements and methods onto the current declining trend of OER is able to identify the likely combination of factors causing the lowering of OER. Care is exercised to ensure factors under day to day management control are discussed. In the nineties, the post weevil bunch material has not changed much in terms of bunch material has not changed much in terms of bunch composition from that in the eighties but what has changed is the heightening of the severe shortage of manpower particularly of the harvesters. The reviews highlights many new aspects of management of post weevil bunch material under current manpower labour shortage situation with emphasis on crop quality and the picking of lose fruits.
