Resumen

Descripción

Cultivated palms are affected by numerous insect species with leafeating caterpillars, particularly from the Limacodidae family. These caterpillars are almost always naturally infected by specific viruses. Development of diagnostic tests (ELISA, nucleic probes) for every virus of interest will enable an epidemiological analysis of viral diseases in the field and a study of virus particle persistence in caterpillar populations, which in turn will make it easier to decide whether to implement biological control. Basic preparations of the viruses of Setothosea asigna and Setora nitens in Indonesia and Sibine fusca in Colombia have proved successful, this last insect being eradicated by aerial spraying of a viral solution containing the equivalent of10 dead caterpillars per hectare treated.
