Resumen

Descripción

Cocoa production in Vanuatu is discussed. Cocoa is Vanuatu's third most important agricultural export. It is grown primarily by smallholders and comes mostly from the island of Malekula. It is usually intercropped and the modest yields from cocoa plantings are essentially due to a low level of agricultural technology among growers and the incidence of pests (e.g. rodents) and diseases such as black pod (Phytophthora sp.). Careless fermentation has led to a decline in quality and merchantable cocoa is mostly classed as grade II. Changes to fermentation methods, clone selection and smallholder training are recommended as ways to increase yield and quality.
