Resumen

Descripción

Two methods of assessing the effectiveness of Cephalonomia stephanoderis in the control of the coffee berry borer (CBB) [Hypothenemus hampei] were compared. The first method involved releases of fixed quantities of parasitoids. The results are expressed as the differences between the CBB infestation rate on recently colonized new fruits (analysis of variance). The second was characterized by quantities of released parasitoids that were proportional to those of attacked fruits harbouring the pest. An absence of any quantitative relation between the initial CBB populations and the parasitoid releases, along with the limited accuracy of final infestation level estimates, meant that the first method gave no tangible results. The second method revealeda clear relation between the quantities of parasitoids released and the fruits infested per plot, with more accurate estimates of pest infestation levels. Under these conditions, it was possible to detect and measure the effectiveness of biological control.
