The N balance associated with production of rape is investigated with examination of losses in soil water, by volatilization and potential pollution by agrochemicals applied. Ways are discussed of improving the environmental, economic and energy balances of production by genetic improvement through breeding for improved resistance to weeds, pests and diseases and improved efficiency of N use and through modifications of crop management by adjustment of dates of sowing and application of fertilizers.
