Resumen

Descripción

The "Proteins" programme established in France in 1978 to study potential sources of oilseed protein for animal feeds and decrease dependence on imported sources and in particular soyabean from the USA is discussed. The programme has achieved its main goal in reducing soya imports from about 90% in the 1980's to 65% of total consumption in 1990. France is now the biggest producer of oilseeds in the European Union (36%) altogether it uses only 18% of rapeseed and sunflower seed produced. Further prospects for the programme are outlined.
