Trends in olive oil output of major producing countries over the last six years are reported: production in 1996-97 reached 2413 Mt, as compared with the average for the period 1990-96 of 1781 Mt. World production is forecast to stand at around 2030Mt in 2000. Production figures are given for the EU (78% of production), Morocco (2%), Syria (3.5%), Tunisia (7%) and Turkey (4.5%). Consumption trends for three groups of countries (producer/exporter countries, producer/importer countries, and importer countries) are given for the same period: overall global consumption stood at 2041 Mt in 1996-7, up from 1664 Mt in 1990-91. New markets for olive oil are the USA, which is expected to import 150 000 t by 2000, Australia (22 600 tonnes by 2000) and a fewother countries.
