The scale of the problem surrounding disposal and biodegradability of waste plastics and polyethylene products in agriculture is outlined. A study was initiated to develop scientific apparatus and to devise a method for predicting biodegradation of agricultural materials under given field conditions from a knowledge of laboratory reactions in the liquid state. The method was developed through testing mineralization of 20 different materials in the laboratory and relating this to degradation in the field over 2 years at 4 sites in France. A knowledge of agroclimatic and soil conditions at these sites will allow derivation of equations to predict rate of degradation under given field conditions.
