The much reduced three stand left over by loggers before land is released for agriculture development and the thightening labout situation in Sabah have necessitated a review of existing methods of land preparation. The greater awareness of environmental pollution also lends credence to a method of land clearing that seeks to minimise disturbance of the natural ecology. The rapid decline in the availability of labour and anticipated consequential rise in labour costs have encouraged land to be prepared in a way where field operations aare accesible to machines to reduce the labour requirements per unit area and be most cost effective in the long.
