The paper briefly reviews generl characteristics of peat soils in the tropics and then considers some important specific characteristics of these soils at series level, in Malaysia. Subsequently important management aspectos of these soils for oil palm are considered. Particular emphasis is given to water management (Especially drainage), compaction, problems of settling of soil, termite infestation and nutrient management.
