Descripción
Results are reported of surveys of wild cocoa [Theobroma cacao] trees undertaken in 1995 along the banks of the Euleupousing, Yaloupi and Oyapok rivers, SE French Guiana. Three populations were identified. Data are presented on the location, distance from the riverbank and morphology of the trees. Characteristics of the sampled material which are unusual for Guianan cocoa trees are pale beans and the Calabacillo pod type. The total absence of witches' broom [Crinipellis perniciosa] symptoms is confirmed. It is argued that there should be a complete distinction between Guianan and Amazonian cocoa trees.
