The horizontal settling tank is common equipment for oil separation in the wet milling process of crude palm oil mills. It was found that 7-10% of palm oil is present in the discharging sludge. To improve the settling efficiency, the influence of settling variables was studied to form a mathematical model of the horizontal settling process. Settling behavior of the oilsludge mixture was studied in a laboratory and the results were applied to a horizontal continuous flow settling tank in a factory. The regression models were validated statistically by the analysis of variance (ANOVA), coefficient of multiple determination R2 and P-value approaches. The settling model reveals that the increase of temperature, palm oil ratio in feed and settling tank volume, together with the decrease of feed flow rate and water ratio in the sludge phase can reduce the palm oil residue in the discharging sludge. The model satisfactorily agrees with the modified Stokes' law. The settling model is used to predict the settling tank provides options and suggest for cleaner production by minimizing water consumption.
