Eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are the active substances, and they may be obtained in the diet from fish and fish oil or biosynthesised from the C18 precursos, -linolenic acid. However, is the biosynthetic rout from a-linolenic acid and effective source of sufficient omega-3 fatty acid for people eating a Western diet?
