Descripción
Soil application of calcium nitrate suppressed the development of basal stem rot, caused by Ganoderma boninense, of oil palm seedlings. Disease severity was reduced by 25-30% based on foliar symptoms, number of fruiting bodies produced and number ofroots with lesions. Calcium nitrate did not reduce mycelial growth of the pathogen, suggesting that the effect of calcium in reducing infection was indirect and probably due to the formation of cell wall components resistant to degradation by Ganoderma.
