Forecasts of vegetable oil consumption in Latin America.

Rodriguez, A.,
Barsacq, J.C.
The factors determining demand for vegetable oils in Latin America over the 1980s and 1990s are outlined, and some projected trends to the year 2005 are offered. The main determinants of demand have been population growth, economic development, the availability of oils and fats, and changing consumer tastes and behaviour. The population of Latin America as a whole currently stands at around 460 million and is expected to rise to 550 million by 2005. Brazil and Mexico account for 54% of this. Annualper caput vegetable oil consumption is 14.7 kg, which is 3 kg above the world average. At the same time, vegetable oil production has reached 10 Mt, and is continuing to increase. Latin America is therefore producing surplus to its requirements. As living standards continue to increase over the next few years, vegetable oil consumption is likely to increase still further, while demand for animal oils and fats, which currently represent only around 20% of total oil consumption, will continue to fall.
