Value addition in the oil palm through molecular farming.

Resumen

Descripción

Biotechnology provides the capacity to create agricultural crops that produce pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals at a fraction of their present cost, an approach known as molecular farming. Transgenic plants can be used to synthesize complex and valuable products, including antibodies for cancer treatment, vaccines, biological polymers and industrial enzymes. Molecular farming has many advantages over traditional production systems since plants lack human pathogens, they can be scaled up easily, and active biological products can be produced inexpensively and in a readilyisolated form. Molecular farming is therefore attractive to both the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, offering new cash crops for agricultural production and an inexpensive and abundant source of pharmaceuticals for the drug companies. Potential targets and expression strategies for molecular farming in oil palm will be highlighted in the manuscript.
