Descripción
A review of coffee (C. canephora) breeding and selection methods is presented, after a description of the main genetic groups (Guineans and Congolese) and their distribution and cultivation. Methods of characterizing genetic diversity for selection in both genotypic and phenotypic terms are discussed. To adopt a breeding programme, decisions have to be made regarding whether clones or hybrids are required, and take into account available genetic variability and time constraints. Selection criteria and evaluation methods in order to develop quality varieties which require less inputs and are less labour intensive are also described.
