Triacylglycerols in Litchi sinensis [L. chinensis] and longan (Euphoria longana [Dimocarpus longan]) seed oils are characterized by cyclopropanoic fatty acids: cis-9,10-methyleneoctadecanoic acid or dihydrosterculic acid constitutes 38.0% of total fatty acids in litchi and 17.4% in longan, whereas cis-7,8-methylenehexadecanoic acid only constitutes 5.5% and 1.0%, respectively. Triacylglycerols of these 2 oils underwent enzymatic hydrolysis with porcine pancreatic lipase or chemical degradation withethyl magnesium bromide, a reagent without chain specificity or regioselectivity. An unequal distribution of cis-7,8-methylenehexadecanoic and cis-9,10-methyleneoctadecanoic acids was found. The former was found in the sn-2 position at 84% in litchi triacylglycerols and at 100% in longan triacylglycerols, while the latter was located in external positions at 88% and 92%, respectively. Comparison of results from the 2 methods confirmed the impossibility of using the results obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis to determine the internal and external distribution of fatty acids in triacylglycerols containing cyclopropanoic fatty acids.
