Abstract
The growth of the root system of oil palm [Elaeis guineensis) trees of one to thirty years old, growing in alluvial soils of the Tumaco region of Colombia was studied. It was found that the trees accumulated root mass continuously during the period studied. The production of root dry matter in kilograms per palm, of primary roots (Wrp), secondary roots (Wrs) or total roots (Wtr) can be calculated using the equations : Wrp=-14.209658 + 8.567823X-0.127224X2-0.000666X3 ( r2 : 0.91) Wrs=-4.966425 + 3.563283X-0.270290X2 + 0.006694X3 (r2 : 0.95) Wtr= -19.17605+12.131176X-0.397522X2 + 0.006028X5 (r2 : 0.92) The rates of dry matter production and of relative growth were higher for primary roots causing larger accumulation of dry matter of this type of roots. In periods where the growth of secundary roots increases in such a way that the root mass always increases with time. It was found that during the first fifteen years the growth of primary roots is larger than the growth of secondary roots.
