Role of parasitoids in controlling oil palm leaf-eating insects

Abstract
Leaf-eating insects are the most damaging oil palm pests in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Parasitoid Hymenoptera, particularly Chalcididae and Ichneumonidae, and some Tachinidae Diptera play a very important role in regulating pest population levels. In some cases, it has proved necessary to complete existing parasitoid reserves with introductions, but this is a delicate undertaking. However, indigenous parasitoid activity can be stimulated by facilitating the growth of the various plants on which they feed. Many predators, particularly bugs ants, also play a substantial role. En Asia, África y Latinoamérica, los insectos defoliadores son las plagas más importantes de la palma de aceite. Los himenópteros parasitoides, especialmente los Chalcididae e Ichneumonidae, y algunos dípteros Tachinidae desempeñan un papel muy importante en la regulación de las poblaciones de estas plagas. En algunos casos ha sido necesario complementar las existencias de parasitoides mediante introducciones, pero que no son operaciones seguras. Al facilitar el desarrollo de plantas alimenticias de los parasitoides nativos se puede favorecer su actividad. También numerosos depredadores, principalmente chinches y hormigas, desempeñan un papel que no se debe menospreciar.
