Abstract
Oil palm yields are analyzed in terms of interception of solar radiation, conversion of intercepted radiation into dry matter, and partitioning of this dry matter between vegetative growth and yield. Effects of planting density, fertilizers and water stress are discussed. Planting density mainly affects light interception, whereas fertilizers and water stress affect the efficiency of conversion. Vegetative growth takes first priority in assimilate partitioning, with any surplus being available for fruit production. As a result, the factor which increase conversion rates also tend to favor partitioning to fruit bunches.
