Abstract
Having started planting oil palm in the mid 1940's, in Central America there are nowadays 100.000 ha, mainly in Honduras (50.7%), Costa Rica (29.7%) and Guatemala (11.5%). About half the area is under small holders or cooperatives [small holders' organizations). In the northern part of the region where half the planted area is located, there are important variations throughout the year in oil extraction rate and a strong seasonal production due to low temperatures during part of the year. Nevertheless, though it is possible to find excellent consistent yields of over 30 t/ha/year, frequently production limitations due to inappropriate soil management and deficient drainage are found.
