Abstract
Biotechnology is an important tool in order to support selection of plant material in breeding programs of several species. For oil palm, the Colombian oil palm sector established, some years ago, research in biotechnology. At the beginning, it worked in the implementation of molecular marker techniques to carry out molecular characterization and genetic diversity analysis. As result of such investigations, several projects have been developed and the generated information is currently being used by Cenipalma's breeding program. Recently, Cenipalma has implemented the Tissue culture Laboratory with the aim of doing clonal propagation of elite material. For the future, Cenipalma hopes to consolidate research in these areas and to include research in molecular phytopathology by using genomic tools.
