Abstract
There are several processes that can be used for the production of palm oil. These processes differ in the way they work and in the equipment used. A key point is the separation of oil, water and solids that is done through natural decantation or centrifugation. The selection of the most appropriate separation equipment is crucial for the plant's profitability. At industrial level, the production should be continuous, which favors the use of centrifuges such as decanter or tricanter centrifuges. Decanter and tricanter centrifuges have a high investment cost compared to natural decantation techniques. This cost would be offset by the reduction in water and steam consumption as well as by the reduced cost on account of pumps, tanks, etc. The use of decanter or tricanter-type centrifuges typically results in higher oil yield with a purity of over 99.5 percent, and reduced loss of oil in sludge.
