Abstract
The presentation will consider how the development of markets for biodiesel has already changed the nature of the demand for vegetable oils and international trade and prices, most notably in the EU. The paper will then proceed to an analysis of the ways in which the future expansion in biodiesel output is likely to affect demand for different edible and inedible oils and hence the patterns of production and trade in these oils. The impact of the achievement of target biodiesel blending rates upon the global areas planted to oil-bearing crops will be discussed in terms of their implications for the future growth in plantings.
