Abstract
The importance of the agricultural sector to the country as a whole is demonstrated by its high job creation potential. In fact, despite accounting for only 8.5% of GDP, the agricultural sector creates 30% of jobs nationwide and 50% of rural jobs. So the great challenge ahead for Colombia is to attain higher growth rates, lower levels of informality, create more formal jobs and improve the human capital. To this end, it is essential to solve the problems of access to land, credit and education, streamline regulations, and facilitate compliance with phytosanitary regulations. Ultimately, the rural economy needs to be competitive to seize the great opportunities afforded to agricultural production by international market trends.
