Abstract
This paper reviews current knowledge about the possible greenhouse-induced climate change to be faced by Latin America. It focuses on the diversity of possible futures and the uncertainty in projections of likely future climates at regional and local levels. Although the highest greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere will lead to a warmer and wetter global climate, with most of the warming at high northern latitudes, little is known about possible impacts on Latin America. Given this uncertainty, how do we proceed to sustain agriculture and address the change to maintain food security for the growing population? It describes the future of climate, water resources and crop production that Latin America, and the Andes in particular, may experience by the year 2050.
