Abstract
In recent years, the oil palm has been in the ?eye of the storm,? because it is blamed for much of the deforestation and therefore for greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions in some countries like Indonesia. Although palm oil is not solely responsible for it, it is certain that it is not going down the right path to make it sustainable. Ideally, degraded land should be used for its expansion, and improvement programs should be implemented to increase productivity. It is also important to implement methods that allow plantations and mills to become agents for the reduction of GHG emissions, given that those systems have advantages over fossil-based energy production systems.
