Abstract
The growth in demand for vegetable oils and animal fats for biofuel uses has created a clear link between the prices of fossil fuels and a large number of agricultural products, including oils and fats. The presentation analyses these relationships and demonstrates how these arise, by studying the experience of some major biofuel-using countries, in particular the US and Germany. The presentation also examines the determinants of fossil fuel prices by considering the reaction of petroleum prices to the demand for petroleum products and to the development of new forms of petroleum supply. The article concludes with a reflection on the implications of this new factor in the oil market for future prices and the outlook for oil prices.
