Colombian Minimum Wage in the Context of the Oil Palm Sector

Abstract
This article provides the reader with the necessary context to analyze the remunerations in the Colombian palm sector. To do this, it examines (i) the socioeconomic profile of the main palm oil producer countries; (ii) the Colombian labor market institutions regarding the minimum wage, as well as the benefits of social security and others for formal workers; and (iii) the Colombian labor market as well as income and expenses conditions. We found that the country has a strong institutional framework around the salaries and benefits for workers. Likewise, it is detected that working in the oil palm sector has a better position and condition relative to the average of workers in the rural sector. Este artículo tiene como objetivo proporcionar al lector el contexto necesario para analizar las remuneraciones del sector palmicultor colombiano. Para ello examina (i) el perfil socioeconómico de los principales países productores de aceite de palma, (ii) la institucionalidad colombiana respecto al salario mínimo, así como los beneficios de la seguridad social para los trabajadores y (iii) las condiciones de mercado laboral e ingresos y gastos en Colombia. Se encuentra que el país tiene una fuerte institucionalidad alrededor de las remuneraciones y beneficios de los trabajadores. Asimismo se detecta que trabajar en el sector palmicultor tiene una ventaja en ingresos y condiciones de vida relativa al promedio de los trabajadores del sector rural.
