Abstract
The agronomic management of interspecific OxG hybrid material requires the adoption of assisted (and artificial) pollination. Several studies focused on artificial pollination using α-naftalenacetic acid (NAA) have shown the benefits of this compound for the variables fruit set and oil content in oil palm fruit bunches. Nevertheless, it has been observed that NAA is incompatible with pollen when both are mixed for pollination. With that in mind, this study sought to evaluate the effect of three cycles of pollen or NAA application (separatelyand without mixing) with frequencies of 2 and 7 days between each one. Results showed statistical differences in three application cycles of NAA vs. control (pollen), increasing oil to bunch potential by 33 % (+2 days frequency) and 38 % (+7 days frequency). For fruit set, the percentage of aborted fruits decreased 61 % (+2 days frequency) and 70 % (+7 days frequency), while the content of normal (fertile) fruits decrease 77 % (+2 days frequency) and 62 % (+7 days frequency). Despite the drop in fertile fruits, there were no differencesin mean bunch weight, due to raquila-to-bunch ratio has significantly higher values for treatments with three application cycles of NAA than the control (three pollen applications) ones, which had a significative decrease. As a result, positive outcomes were identified for the variables mean bunch weight, fruit set, and oil to bunch potential after NAA application. Therefore, the application of pollen and NAA separately is suggested.
