Abstract
Who is RSPO, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil? What milestones have been achieved in 2011 and 2012? What is RSPO’S future in the coming years? These are key aspects to understand the functioning of this Roundtable. Three words can be used to describe how RSPO operates: a membership-based organization, where participation is voluntary and decision making is by consensus. Its objective is to seek balanced development for the industry that is legal and viable and contributes to sustainable development from an economic and environmental point of view and with social benefits. Nowadays, there is consensus among stakeholders as to how this industry should be developed and in which direction it should go. The RSPO initiative is based on defining in a comprehensive manner, good agricultural practices, fair treatment of workers and equitable treatment for communities, appropriate and correct acquisition of land, and environmental care. Among the milestones, it is highlighted that the RSPO brand nowadays is synonymous with responsibility and seriousness, and up to September 2012, close to 77 licenses have been issued, covering fourteen countries. In 2011, three years after the start of the process, more than one million hectares were certified representing five million tonnes of sustainable palm oil. Twelve percent of palm oil production is considered certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO). With the advances of the Roundtable and the idea that more and more producers and buyers around the world are interested in sustainable palm oil, the future of this industry is guaranteed.¿Qué es la RSPO, Mesa Redonda de Aceite de Palma Sostenible?, ¿cuáles son los hitos que se han logrado en 2011-2012?, y ¿cuál es el futuro de la RSPO en los años venideros?, son aspectos esenciales para comprender el funcionamiento de esta Mesa. Con tres palabras se puede describir el modo cómo opera la RSPO: la membrecía, es una participación voluntaria y las decisiones se toman por consenso. Su objetivo es buscar un desarrollo balanceado para la industria, que sea legal y viable y aporte al desarrollo sostenible desde el punto de vista económico, ambiental y con beneficio social. Hoy día hay consenso entre las partes interesadas o stakeholders sobre cómo se debe desarrollar esta industria y hacia dónde debe ir. La iniciativa de la RSPO está fundamentada en definir de manera integral buenas prácticas agrícolas, un tratamiento justo a los trabajadores y equitativo para las comunidades, la adquisición adecuada y correcta de la tierra y el cuidado hacia el medio ambiente. Entre los hitos se destaca que hoy en día la marca RSPO es sinónimo de responsabilidad y seriedad y a septiembre de 2012, cerca de 77 licencias han sido emitidas, lo que cubre a catorce países. En 2011, tres años después del inicio del proceso, más de un millón de hectáreas fueron certificadas, esto representó cinco millones de toneladas de aceite de palma sostenible (CSPO). El 12% de la producción de aceite de palma es considerado como CSPO. Con los avances de la Mesa y la idea de que cada vez más productores y compradores en el mundo se interesan por el aceite de palma sostenible, el futuro de esta industria está garantizado.
