Tolerance to Oil Palm Bud Rot Disease in the Material Elaeis guineensis: Case of the Material C07 in Eastern Ecuador

dc.descriptionIn 1928, a bud rot type disease, (pc, for its name in Spanish, Pudrición del cogollo), is discovered in Panamá, and later, at the end of the 1960s, a similar problem appears in Colombia. Then, over the next ten years, similar diseases appear in Brazil, Surinam, and Ecuador. These diseases, after a variable period of time may advance very rapidly, as in the case of Colombia, where plantations were almost completely destroyed. For over thirty years, considerable research has been conducted on entomology, plant pathology and crop management, but so far no practical solution has been found. Breeding work led to the dissemination of an interspecific hybrid, which is called OxG (Elaeis oleifera x Elaeis guineensis), but this hybrid still presents some problems. In particular, its extraction rate is slow, it requires assisted pollination and pollen supply, and also the purchase price of the bunches. This makes this hybrid not very accessible to smallholders. Cirad carried out two trials of the interspecific hybrids in Palmeras del Ecuador to test their resistance in new extension plantings and in replanting plots, confirming that they do not work when planted in areas that were affected by PC.en-US
dc.descriptionEn 1928 se descubre en Panamá una enfermedad de tipo Pudrición del cogollo (PC) y luego, al final de los años 1960, en Colombia aparece un problema similar. Después, durante los diez años siguientes surgen en Brasil, Surinam y Ecuador enfermedades parecidas, que luego de un tiempo variable puede ser muy rápido su avance, como el caso de Colombia, que llegó a la destrucción casi completa de las plantaciones. Durante más de treinta años, se realizaron numerosas investigaciones en entomología, fitopatología, manejo del cultivo, pero hasta el momento no se tiene ninguna solución práctica. En mejoramiento genético se llegó a la difusión de un híbrido interespecífico, lo que se llama OxG (Elaeis oleifera x Elaeis guineensis), pero este híbrido aún presenta algunos problemas. En particular su tasa de extracción es baja, requiere de polinización asistida y abastecimiento del polen y también el precio de compra de los racimos. Esto hace que este híbrido sea muy poco accesible a los pequeños productores. El Cirad ha desarrollado dos ensayos de materiales guineensis (SH-GP9 y SH-GP10) en Palmeras del Ecuador para buscar fuentes de resistencia en siembras nuevas y en lotes de renovación, confirmando que no funcionan cuando se hace en zonas que fueron afectadas por Pudrición del cogollo.es-ES
