Abstract
The World Bank Group is a development institution, and palm oil is a fascinating development story that is framed in four key areas: (a) food security, inasmuch as the palm oil is the most consumed vegetable oil in the developing world, (b) productivity, and certainly agriculture must become increasingly productive to feed a world in which 9 billion people inhabit, (c) the impact on reducing poverty and unemployment is substantial, especially when crops are labor intensive and production is run by smallholders, who see their income increased, and (d) the issues of environment, social and governance are significant and fairly represent an area of strength for the World Bank Group. The World Bank Group and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) are interested in supporting the development of oil palm in Colombia, where they see an opportunity, not only because of its rapid growth, but also because the country has in order the National Interpretation of the RSPO Principles and Criteria, and evolving smallholder schemes, well developed, and so on.
