Abstract
The quest for alternative fuels to petroleum has led to the development of fuels from various sources, including renewable raw materials such as fats and oils. There are fuels that can be derived from triacylglycerols containing raw material. One of them is biodiesel, defined as blends of mono-alkyl esters of vegetable oils or animal fats. This article discusses general aspects of the use of palm oil biodiesel in diesel engines, the current regulations and the factors that affect the quality of biodiesel.La búsqueda de combustibles alternos a los derivados del petróleo ha llevado al desarrollo de combustibles a partir de diversas fuentes, incluidas las materias primas renovables, tales como las grasas y los aceites. Existen combustibles que se pueden derivar de los triacilgliceroles que contiene la materia prima. Uno de ellos es el biodiésel, que se define como mezclas de mono-alquil ésteres de aceites vegetales o grasas animales. Este artículo aborda aspectos generales del uso del biodiésel de aceite de palma en motores diésel, la normatividad vigente y los factores que inciden en su calidad.
