Abstract
Palm kernel oil is a co-product of palm oil, with a production volume 10-13% that of palm oil. Being a lauric oil, it competes with coconut oil in world markets where the two important applications are in oleochemical and soap production and in specialty fats for confectioneries. In recent years, production of both palm and palm kernel oils have expanded rapidly. In 1993, Malaysian palm kernel oil production expanded by about 20% to reach close to 1 million tons. Palm kernel oil is marketed via a chain of numerous crushers, refiners, local and overseas dealers and brokers, and finally the oleochemical or confectionery en users. Time differences between producer and consumer countries and factors such as shipment volume and freight cost-control influence the marketing and economics of the palm oil trade. Competition with coconut oil and the diversity of market outlets, including the existence of large oleochemical plants in the producer countries, are other factors that characterize the palm kernel oil market. An understanding of the technical propierties and marketing procedures will enable users to benefit by using palm kernel oil as an laternative to coconut oil.
